TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

As a dance educator, I am deeply committed to enriching the educational experience for my students by drawing upon my rich Hispanic heritage, engaging in music-based research, and infusing my love for teaching into every aspect of my pedagogy. My approach is centered around fostering a diverse and supportive learning environment, incorporating culturally relevant methods, and leveraging technology to enhance creativity and communication.

Grounded in the principles of critical pedagogy, I strive to create transformative experiences that empower students to question and challenge the societal and political structures within the dance world that perpetuate oppression. Three core values—people, process, and product—underpin my teaching philosophy, shaping a classroom where students feel secure expressing their individuality, connecting with their peers, and embracing vulnerability.

Firstly, I prioritize valuing the people in my educational space. My objective is to guide students in understanding themselves in relation to the course material. To achieve this, I emphasize the importance of my own authenticity as an educator, practicing self-care, embracing mistakes, and celebrating the unique movement styles of each student. I believe in the power of individual voices, and by fostering a sense of self-awareness, I aim to inform and elevate their higher learning.

Secondly, I place a significant emphasis on valuing the learning process. Recognizing the importance of students understanding their own learning styles, I employ Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process to provide daily feedback. Assessments are carefully designed to measure targeted knowledge and skills, and self-evaluations guide students in becoming well-rounded, self-aware learners. In-class activities are curated to broaden their academic and scholarly understanding of dance.

Thirdly, I encourage valuing the product. I guide students to view their final work as a meaningful contribution to their learning and the curriculum. Accessibility is key, and my commitment to being available before, during, and after class fosters an environment where students and I can collaboratively redefine what participation looks like, creating more opportunities for growth.

By prioritizing the values of people, process, and product, I empower students with choices that facilitate individual risk-taking in our rapidly evolving world. Whether in virtual or in-person settings, I am dedicated to providing flexibility and building a positive atmosphere where diversity and inclusion are foundational to their education. My passion for dance education propels me to be the best version of myself in the classroom, fostering a dynamic and celebratory learning environment.

"I teach to create a community where different types of people feel safe to express themselves, bond with others, and allow them selves to be vulnerable."
